Hi

I was wondering if anyone knows roughly how long it takes for the radiator fan to cut in from cold on a 4GTL (1108cc)? Any replies will be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards

Chris

I presume you mean when the car is stationary? From memory, maybe between about 5-15 mins? Obviously will take less time if inside a garage/more time on a cold, windy day!

I can't find an indication of time until fan comes on in Haynes manual, but it does explain that to check the radiator temperature sensor you disconnect its two wires then touch them together: the fan should switch on (provided the ignition is on).

Have you searched the forum for cooling system bleeding? I think someone gave a rough indication of when the fan should come on.

The perils of no temp guage
fan should cut in at 85 c at that point the brass switch will be too hot to keep finger on best checked with infra red laser thermometer
worth cleaning or replacing push on terminals and joiner on fan wiring as corrosion usual prob

Hi

Thanks for the reply and advice.

by the way when the red light comes on (if)you are at 115 degrees c if you drive at that temperature you will definitely have head gasket failure

yes it takes some time for this to cut in in fact it is almost at boiling point and all the hoses will feel very hot. in winter the fan poss will never work, it normaly only starts working in traffic jams etc on warm hot days, when driving along at 40 mph it will not normaly cut in either.
you can check the system by removing the wires from the rad switch put a shunt or joint these tow wires together, switch on ignition and the fan should run.
this test checks power to your rad switch is good, and the fan motor is working ok. if it do not work check the fan its self these motors and know to sieze up
hope you find this helpfull
