Ready for MOT...not

I was taking my R4 for an MOT tomorrow when the driver side indicator decided to stop working , all be it an earth wire that needs soldering on, whilst the car was stationary and ticking over there was a noise coming from the rear nearside torsion lever cap ...I think, like a gentle tapping.
has any one any idea what it is and is it serious?
billy:eek:

Maybe the exhaust? If 1 or more of the rubber mounts shear off you get excessive vibration on the exhaust system. If the exhaust touches any parts under the car you would get noise in tune with the engine. The suspects are found under the rear seat and near the rear axle. They might be tricky to remove due to rust.

I had one of the rubber mounts broken and I replaced that with a home made one, I'll have a look today if it stays dry.

MOT...Passsssssss

I took the little car for it's medical today and it passed with flying colours, thanks for the tip about the exhaust Blacksmith that's exactly what it was.
I am looking to buy a carb if any one has one for sale.

No carb, I'm afraid, but glad your 4 passed its MOT :)

I sent an email to Carbex demon.co.uk asking how long it would take to refurbish my carb and they have told me they are really busy, probably about eight weeks!

What's wrong with your carb? I've never had enough wear in mine to cause trouble, though blockages have caused issues in the past.

On that basis I might be able to offer an exchange service :D Though it would probably be more helpful to help you fix the issue in the first place.

Vacuum tends to be the big issue with carbs - either a missing plug (sorry, restrictor) in the hose to the inlet manifold or a faulty vacuum advance on the distributor.

It seems to be dirt in the carb as it doesn't respond very well when you put your foot down, the carb struggles and the car only reaches around forty five MPH but it is a struggle so it could need a good clean out.
I did pop half a bottle of Redex in through the carb last week, the car itself doesn't smoke and the engine sounds sweet but just no pull, I cleaned the plugs and points so I guess that just leaves the carb.

Malcolm It's dark now and I can't check it out but I don't think I can recall seeing a vacuum advance device fitted to the dizzy
When I am driving the car, if I push the accelerator down too quick it begins to die a little, so I have to push it down gradually to gain speed...any help?

I doubt if it's just the carb - as Malcolm said other things need checking as well and also setting up and that includes checking for induction leaks, compression, valve clearance, timing, vacuum unit if fitted, bob weights and springs in the distributor - always leave the carb until last!!

The only reason I thought is was the carb is because the guy that owned it before me let it run dry a couple of times, hence the dirt in the carb theory, but I'll check out all the other things you pointed out first.

It sounds like it needs a good service first. I don't think I've ever bought a R4 where the basics like points gap and timing were anywhere near close, and they've generally needed fixing to get me home. A good going over as Steve suggests is the way forwards.

Don't do anything by eye or by ear. Set of feeler gauges and a timing light will get them right. Haynes manual talks you through the basics and Frederick the Frog fills in some of the gaps.

I took the plugs out today and found that there were two different types plus they were black sooted, too rich a mixture.
I would be grateful if you could tell me the correct plugs to use, after cleaning the plugs and adjusting the mixer screw the car is running much better but not perfect.

Steve, for 1108cc L92Y are recommended, the L87Y are for the 747/782/845 cc.

I have a couple of spare carbs but not back in UK until November.
If you still need one then give me a shout Gary

Thanks everyone, I have now managed to source the correct plugs for only £8.79p for the set of four including postage from Carsparkplugs.com
I might take you up on your offer Gary but first I will take it to the local Car Care garage at Messingham near me, the guy there is absolutely brilliant, he only charges £30 for an MOT with no fee for a retest and his hourly rate is an eye watering £35 an hour for labour, so I'll pop it in to him and he should be able to sort it out in an hour .....cheap as chips guys.

I put the new plugs in the car and a new air filter plus a dizzy top and fired it up but still not 100% I then took of the air breather pipe from the carb to the rocker cover and low and behold it was blocked with all the cr*p of the day from lying around for a few years, after wards I fired it up and away we go PPPPPPPPerfect, running and ticking over beautifully, what a dream machine.
