REAR AXLE replacement

has anyone replaced the rear axle complete on a R4 ? the workshop manual only gives info on replacing a suspension arm but that involves the dreaded torsion bar and I don't have the necessary tools for compressing it. It seems a better option to replace the complete axle with the bars already fitted ?? any advice will be welcome.

The torsion bars will be a little more difficult to remove after 30 years than the Haynes manual suggests. Light tap - yeah right.

The whole rear axle comes off very easily - it is bolted on. There is no need for any spring compressor if removing the whole thing as a unit. Putting it back on can be a bit of a pain if the bolts are not fitted in the correct sequence. From memory the big bolts in the inner chassis need to go in first and the rest can be lines up with screwdrivers through the bolt holes.

Malcolm has it about right, it does not take long if you have a bit of help, plus it is easier to change the flexi brake hoses.
