Hi image.jpgHi could image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Hi could any body tell me if these would fit on my 1975 r4 tl,they measure from end to end 460mm I ordered them from a local parts firm ,according to the book they are the correct ones ,but my local mechanic saying they are to long ,can anybody help???
Thanks mark

Hello Mark. They look about the right length to me, and I'm sure that when I was playing around with my back suspension last year the measurement of 460 mm comes to mind, or there abouts. I was trying to raise the ride height at the time, but eventually I took my car to Derek Flavell of Renospeed who did the job, which involved removing the torsion bars. If you are simply replacing the shockers I'm pretty sure they should fit though. You need to take the weight of the car on the swinging arm, making the mounting points as far away from each other as possible. Sorry I have no record of the part number of the ones I fitted. Regards Brian.

I have exactly the same pair of shock absorbers on my 4L.

You have to fully compress them and hold there by some means, They are gas pressurised and will extend to full length by their own.

If you have a vice mounted on a solid heavy bench, put the end with the bolt eye in the vice and using some rags to cushion the other end give it some welly to compress it. Prior to this get some stout wire cut to length, two pieces required, and hook/twist them around each end. When you have the shocker compressed hook/twist the other two ends of wire together. This is really a two man job. Four Weetabix required for breakfast first. Good luck. Brian.

Hi Mark

I also have purchased these for my 1990 clan ! but even fully compressed i cannot get them on ! I think it depends on the bracket type you have on your swinging arm as mine is a double sided on i cannot pass the ring end over it enough to get it in. The one i removed (sacs bogal) was easy to get out and much smaller in size ! If it helps i used a sash clamp to compress it and then wired it up to hold it in compression ! that said it was not easy and they still sit on my garage bench ! Good luck ! let us know if you succeed maybe with some photos

Hi Mark. When they were first fitted I had some assistance from a very strong garage mechanic who compressed them on the car. This is not the way to do it, and he reckoned he hurt his shoulder in doing so. When I later removed them to play with the ride height, to no avail, I wired them up as described. I have to say I did wire them up on the car, so they were already compressed. However I'm sure you will be able to compress them using the vice method. My cast steel swinging arm has a single upright bracket which the eyed end of the shocker simply bolts to, so I can't quite understand clan man why you couldn't fit yours. My car is an 83 GTL, a late car like yours, so both should be the same. Anyway Mark, keep us posted please.

Hi cornish
I simply couldn't get the eye end of the shock past the bracket on the swinging arm. even with the swinging arm jacked up as high as i could get it without damage ! the sachs bogel one that i removed had a much smaller eye knuckle and came out no problem ! The problem i found is that when i jacked the swinging arm up to increase the access the bracket was too close to the body underside to be able to get the new larger one in ! I would welcome any help regarding this also ? I attach a photo of my swinging arm to show the afore mentioned bracket

Hi Clanman, I can see how you had a problem fitting your shockers. The eye end is no bigger than 20mm thick on mine, and just bolts to the upright bracket on the outboard side. In your photo it looks like its bolted on the inboard side, I think this is wrong. Locate the stud on the other end first, but leave loose until you've sorted the eye end. Go on, you can do it. :)

My cars at the back of my work shop at the moment. So no photos, I remember them being damm hard to fit !

Mine came wired up ready to fit and I can't remember if they are the exact model, but they are the same make!

Hi look on clems page , you need to jack the swing arm up then with a couple of people swinging off the rear bumper ,it's real easy .
Mark
