Hi I've just recently had new wheel bearings put on both sides of the rear wheels ,a couple of weeks have gone by ,I can move the rear wheel ,side to side ,I don't think this is meant to happen the guy at the garage said if he tightened them up to much it would damage the bearing ,he said that the ones with tapered bearings were meant to have a bit of play ,please any body help ??????
Thanks mark

Hi there. Assuming that the bearings have been fully seated in the hubs, the hub nuts are then tightened only finger tight. Next the hub nut locking cover is fitted followed by a split-pin through it and the stub axle. If all this is done correctly the hub shouldn't come loose, and there also shouldn't be any play in the wheel. Hope this helps, regards Brian.

the renault workshop manual says tighten the hub nut to 3m. da N [25 ft/lbs] whilst turning the wheel hub. end float should be 0,001 to 0,002

Hi there. I'm only passing on information given to me by a friend who served his motor engineering apprenticeship back in the 80s, and worked on Renault 4s quite a lot. He insists that finger tight is quite enough for the rear hub-nuts, and I must say I've used this method and it seems to work. Just make sure that the bearings outer shells are fully seated in the brake drum/hub. Any tighter than this and you can feel lumpiness as you turn the hub, and in the long run this would of course damage the bearings.

Hi thanks for all the tips ,got it sorted feeling better now ,ok next question ,shockers any tips on what's the best and at a resonable price ???
Thanks again mark

Hi Mark, I've got KYB gas shocks on the back of my GTL, they've been on there for about 2 1/2 years now and are giving very good service, ie, camping trips to France, and wine supplies on return journeys. They came from a local motor factors, and I think they were about £80 a pair. You can get cheaper shockers but apparently they don't last long. It's all to do with the fact that they fit almost horizontally, and work opposite to the norm, and cheap ones aren't up to it. Hope this helps, regards Brian.

Hi Mark, you would have to specify that they are for a R4, but I expect they will ask for the cars' reg number so they can get the correct ones for you. But probably the year of manufacture should be enough. Regards Brian.

Hi Brian I've just posted a thread re rear shockers ,would you mind having a look at the photos ,let me know what you think ,my local garage saying they are to long by at least 5 inch ?????
Thanks mark
