Renault 845 Running Rich and question about sourcing points and rotor

Greetings,
I have a Renault 845 engine and up and running. I need to go to full chock to start and once it's warmed up, a bit of blue smoke to start, then, seems to be running good. it has a solex DIS 5 REN 434 (on a metal tag) carb recently cleaned up.

It seems like its running rich. Why, because it smells and I can't describe exacty how it smells but smells...well rich..
Is there way way to tune this carb?

On a separate note, I have a model 248 distributor. Can you tell me where I can find points and a rotor? Better if I had a whole backup distributor.

Thanks again in advance for all the help !

The carburettor has two screw adjustments; one changes the idle (tick-over) speed and the other alters the mixture (richness.) To tune the engine the mixture needs to be correctly set, and this method assumes the ignition (points gap, plugs gap, condenser function, HT lead & rotor arm condition and dwell angle) are all correctly set and in good order.

Warm up the engine to normal running temperature. Using the idle adjuster, raise the tick-over speed to about 1500 RPM and then s-l-o-w-l-y unscrew the mixture screw out until the engine starts to run in a lumpy way. Now turn the mixture screw in until the engine is running at its smoothest. Now reduce the tick-over speed to the correct level as per the manufacturer's specification. Take the car for a run and use this experience to make fine adjustments to the carburettor. This is an "old school" method; using a gas analyser will give a more accurate method of setting the CO mixture against the manufacturer's specification, but, in the absence of these devices, the method outlined above will serve.

Hello Bill
Is there any chance you could post a couple of photos of the distributor? The cars had different types - a picture of the rotor arm and points would help a lot. Is there a manufacturer's name (e.g. Ducellier/SEV Marchal) on the distributor body?
