:( Can anyone help?
Has anyone else experienced glow plugs on all the while, causing extensive engine damage?

Glow plugs are supposed to get the diesel engine started from cold, so perhaps if they didn't turn off after the starter is turned they might cause pre-ignition, which with the high compresion of a diesel engine might well cause damage.

What is the problem with your car?

Thinking about it, I can't see anything worse happening with glow plugs staying on other than you needing new glow plugs pretty quickly, the engine should remain OK. Are you sure that's the problem and not something like a broken cambelt?

I don't think the electrical feed to the glow plugs is a service item, so you can't really blame your garage if the problem was to do with the glow plugs.
