Hi all, my renault R4, if driven hard 110kph for 15 minutes there is oil all over the motor and engine bay, and no oil on the dip stick. This motor has been totally rebuilt. At normal running around 80 kph no leak,
Any ideas, Thank you.
It is hard to tell without seeing it. As you mentioned engine rebuild and the amount of oil you are losing. I'm wondering whether it is coming from between the cylinder head and the engine block. The cylinder head needs re-torquing after a certain number of miles after a rebuild. It could also be coming from the rocker cover (stud nuts loose, gasket incorrectly fitted). Another factor is to ascertain which oil seals and gaskets were changed or not changed as part of the rebuild (check the invoice).
To work out where an oil leak is coming from, I normally completely degrease the engine bay with a degreasant so that I have a clean starting point to work out where the leak is coming from. Then run the engine according to the speed and amount of time you said it takes for it to start leaking. Stop and check where it is coming from. You could take a photo/video and upload it on the website and I'm sure one of the members could shed more light on the situation.
Start check valve cover gasket, oil cap and breather hoses.
Clean engine or dry it clean with a cloth, fill oil so it´s on level.
Start engine with bonnet open and check for leaks, rev engine then you should be able to see were it´s leaking.
Report back what´s happening and we can give you better advise. Best Regards from Sweden.
