This story began some months ago.
driving home from my job I suddenly heard and felt a hard banging from the right hind quarter when I drove over a small hump in the road.
At first glance I couldn't see what was happening but on further inspection it turned out that the right inner silent bloc at the rear had perished after 30 years of abuse.
I drove on with this problem for some time and a month ago after our move to the new location and the wait for a volvo that sat on the bridge, I finally found time to address this task.
Plagued with setbacks
Torsionbars that wouldn't budge.
The left wheelarm that had some extra holes in it because it had rotted away from the inside out.
sheared of bolts etc.
Finding replacements was no problem.
Last weekend I tried to end this story. I had cleaned up al the parts and got them ready to put the new silent blocks on and stick everything in place.
After some hours work I was finally ready to put the torsion bars back in place. when I was adjusting the hight of the right wheelarm a sudden cracking noise found my ear. The wheelarm had sheared of completely inside the outer silentbloc.
So yesterday I replaced the lot with an old TL Rear axle until I find a new right wheelarm.
my poor forester whithout its rear axle
broken inner silent block it turned out that the inner steel bushing had perished the rubber was fine
New inner silentblocs and the anchor plates
pushing in place
cleaned up wheelarm
Joining the anchor plate and wheelarm
This is what 30+ years of water salt and grime does to unprotected steal. Adjusting the wheel hight finishes it.
