Replacing starter motor

Hi All,
I'm looking at replacing the starter motor on my F6 with a reconditioned unit. I've been told R4's were fitted with different starter motors (I assume this was the case with F6's also?) and I'm wondering, in trying to source a replacement, whether they are interchangeable or do I have to get the same model? If anyone has details of a potential supplier, besides der Franzose, I'd be grateful also :-)
Michael.

Hi there, I'm not sure if starter-motors are interchangeable, but I have a friend in Brittany who breaks 4s and I'm sure he could supply one to you, not recon but good second hand, as I see you are sometimes in France. Let me know if you would like his phone number, then I could pm it to you. Regards Brian.

Hi Brian, thanks for that. I'm not going to be in France until sometime in 2013 so I'll keep the Brittany contact as a Plan B. In fact I will be off to Italy before I get to my beloved Montpellier again :-)
Does anyone else know whether starter motors are interchangeable? (I hope they are, would make things a lot easier ...)

They are interchangeable between engine "families" (3 bearing and 5-bearing). For what is of interest to you, any 5-bearing starter will fit, even these of R5 and R6. You can recognize it by having 3 fixing bolt holes, small engine (left-hand turning) starters are fixed by a two bolt pattern.
