reverse lights

I was wondering if anybody could help me with putting the reverse gear lights on my 1990 Slovenian
made GTL back into work?
It's probably a just a faulty switch but I cannot seem to locate it.
Any tips?

I don't own a GTL, but from the parts catalogue it would seem to be on the left flank of the gearbox casing, appr. 10-20 cm to the front from where the lh-side driveshaft exits the 'box, vertically on the same level with the driveshaft centre and the upper of the two strengthening ridges cast in the casing.

There are two M16-threaded holes on the casing, the other one's got a blanking plug, and the reverse light switch should bolt to the other. Which of them is which I can't tell from the drawing.

If it turns out not to be a faulty switch or wire terminal, then it might be there's a broken wire (or insulation) where the harness passes from body to tailgate. There the wires flex every time you open or close the 'gate and may break with age (or the insulation gets chafed causing a short).

Yes, the reverse light switch is on the left hand side of the gearbox with 2 wires coming from it. You need to check if power is going to the wires. Turn on the ignition, disconnect the wires from the switch and use a test lamp on each wire to see if it lights up. You earth one side of the lamp, and poke a wire into each connector. If the test lamp lights, then join the wires together by bridging them with a spare piece of wire. See if the reverse lights are working. If they are, then it's the switch that is at fault. If they are not, use your test lamp on the power wire going to the reverse lamps. If the test lamp lights up, it's likely to be a bad earth/bad connection/faulty bulbs in the actual lamps. If the test lamp does not light up, there will be some faulty wiring between the dashboard and the reverse lamps.

This is quite a simple problem to sort out if you tackle it methodically.

Mine has them on the tailgate in each lower corner - about 4" up and about 4" in. You may be lucky and have the wiring already incorporated into the loom. If your gearbox does not have a switch fitted, see if there are 2 spare wires in it's vicinity. Similarly, check for a spare wire inside the tailgate.

The lights on mine are made by WIPAC - stainless steel with glass lenses. They are still available from various sources in the UK.

The reverse lights should still be available from Renault, too.

Part no: 77 00 751 459 (= one complete unit with lense and base)

Costs ca. €40 or more, depending on country, how high the VAT and how greedy the importer. :( ;)

The lense (77 00 751 460) is no longer available from Renault separately, you'll need to buy the whole unit.

I found 2 types of reverse lights:

1. Round 2. Rectangular

Are both standard from renault?

The car in the first photo looks as if it has the genuine Renault lights. These sound expensive at 40 Euros each. The WIPAC ones I mentioned earlier are a lot cheaper and better looking. These can be obtained from Minispares.com.

If your R4 does not have the wiring for reverse lights, you can fit a switch and carry out a bit of wiring from front to rear. It will mean removing the headlining though to make a neat job.

That yellow R4 is mine. I haven't seen them on any other R4, so my guess is that they are the work of some previous owner. Or maybe they where installed by the swedish reseller. It's a -75, and by -76 the swedish cars had back lights installed from the factory. I own a -76 too, and it has the same lights as the blue one.

My reverse lights are almost working now.
I need to replace the bulb holders or at least give them a nice cleaning job.
I found a bad contact on the connector near the gearbox too.
But the system works generally. What a joy!

Thanks everyone!

Phoned today my shop. They can order just the front, and back lights.
After that phoned my renault store. They said 28€ + VAT.
I have also looked on ebay & der franzose.

One is for sure scrap but I'm thinking if I'm going to repair it or just order 2x the original.

Both my reversing lights were completely rusted away inside so I stripped them out and made new circuits with bright white LEDs. I have hundreds of leftover LEDs and other circuit bits, so I could make more and they'd cost a lot less than 28€.

Also my gearbox switch is kaput, tested by bypassing it with a bit of wire. I've just bought a new one (CI brand, came with a handy aluminium washer too) so I'll fit it tonight and upload photos of my new lights when they're working. I'm quite proud of them :)

Edit: When I unscrew the switch, is gearbox oil going to leak out?

Could you post a photo of the LED reversing light - I'm thinking of trying something to the Renault 5 to turn the reversing lights into combined reversing and fog lights.

Here's my lights. They're quite nice, though I'm thinking of adding more LEDs because they could be brighter.

Combined reversing and fog lamps is a good idea, and should be very easy to do. There is plenty of room on the board. I might try it, as I have about a hundred red LEDs lying around :)

jjad, you were right. The switch is slightly higher than the filler hole, and no oil leaked out.
