Ringing noise

Hi guys
As the woes of the spring with my little R4 now finally are coming to an end (ie. 1. bad HT wire, 2. blocked jet, 3. worn water hoses to the carb.), now only a strange "ringing" noise has developed through the last 500 km. It is very high pitched, and seems to disappear when applying som throttle.
Does anyone know what I should look for? Listening through a screwdriver didn't pin the source sadly and neither does applying pressure on any parts of the engine bay and surroundings.

Niels

For any noise that disappears when opening the throttle, I would carefully check for vacuum leaks from inlet manifold and/or carburettor gaskets.

Another source may be the clutch release bearing - try progressively pressing the pedal and check if the noise changes.

It's not a "pinking" noise, is it? After your recent adventures perhaps the mixture or timing has been disturbed, causing the noise....

Just a thought!

Nope not pinking. But might be something near the distributor though

Hi Niels

I had a high pitched whistling noise coming from the inside of the distributor which would disappear under acceleration. Not exactly sure what was at fault inside the distributor. I had a spare distributor, changed it over and the noise went away.

Hi Niels
Have you tried putting a couple of drops of oil on the felt pad under the rotor arm?
Another thought - could your belt tensioner bearing be on the way out?

Might be the case. I've given all belt pulleys some grease to see if it eases off.

There's norhing to be heard now, so all is well. The 4 will be home from the welder on friday or monday, and fit for a few years more of duty before a complete overhaull.
