Long time no post, but I thought someone might be interested in our recent road trip. We live in the Manche dept in Normandie, and decided to take our 1987 R4 Savane (so 956 cc of outright power) on a trip to the Med. The outward journey was spread over 4 days and was 1076 km along the 'old roads' ie no motorways and very few dual carriageways. Destination was the coast near Perpignan. We stayed there a week, and apart from a trip into Spain - very twisty roads en route - we did little mileage. The return trip we did in 2 days, again very little on motorways apart from about 80 km south of Poitiers - 445 km on the Saturday, 602 km on the Sunday. Overall we did 2276 km / 1316 miles and used just over 25 gallons of petrol / fuel consumption was 50.97 mpg.
Before we set off I did the usual service, and cleaned and rebuilt the carb using a kit obtained from Alepoc on Ebay.fr. We had been suffering from occasional hesitation.
By the end of the first day the car was running better, and it got better the farther we went - it was the archetypal 'old ladies car' one owner prior to us who had only used it for shopping. After a fortnight I think the cobwebs had been well and truly blown out of it and it is now going much better.
It used no oil, and I only needed to top up the cooling system once - I suspect the long run got rid of a couple of small airlocks - the last 1500 km required no water.
The only problem we had was an odd noise late on the last afternoon, as if something was rubbing on a driveshaft. A good look revealed no apparent problem - and it disappeared, I suspect we had picked up a twig or small branch off the road (it was very windy) and it had subsequently dropped out again.
An interesting experience!!
