Rust Subframe

Hello,
I have a R4 TL 1986 and I'm devastated to get the new from the garage that the subframe is irreparable (rust).
My mechanic not a R4 expert (and not an enthusiast!) and i think he wants me to be sensible and buy a ford mondeo or something:) So i thought I'd do a bit of research....
Initially I took his word for it and started looking for a new car but R4"s go for a minimum of about 3000 euros over here. For sure the undercarriage of the car is absolutely needing plenty of welding (that's if it is reparable) so I should be at least a little bit sensible.
But now I'm wondering if perhaps I should shop around for some second opinions/inform myself.
The rust has caused the area of the subframe/chassis which attaches to front wheel (suspension?) to break. The car is driveable (obviously not safely and I've been having it towed) but you can feel that the wheel is not supported by the rest of the frame.
I've replaced lots of parts in the car (head gasket, radiator etc etc) and would really like to repair the car if at all possible.
Does anyone have any ideas whether a break in the frame as described above is fixable or if indeed my mechanic is right and it's simply not reparable at all.
I live on a small island in the Med so this forum makes a great starting point for my research. Thanks.

Post some photographs on here (use the upload a photo button beside the reply button) and we can give you better advice.

It sounds like the bracket attaching the front suspension tie bar has broken. Normally that would be easy to repair, perhaps 2 hours of work, but it sounds like your garage doesn't want to repair it.

In one month I will be riding trough Northern Spain on my bicycle. If you are anywhere near the route to Santiago de Compostella Ill be willing to have a look.
