I can see the plan here.

I don't know how to remove the speedo needle without damaging it. The perspex cover is held by two bolts which are visible after the dash has been removed.

No idea how to fix the backwards speedo - I guess the problem is the drive inside the gearbox is turning the wrong way (wrong gearbox) but don't know of any adaptors to fix it.

Don't think an angle would do much unless it is specially designed to change rotation direction.

Might be possible to find something to fo that as it isn't unusual to have the same trouble fitting modern running gear into classics. Might be worth giving speedy cables a bell to see if they have any device to jelp.

Why don't you disconnect the speedo drive from behind the speedo, drive the car and see whether the cable is rotating clockwise or anticlockwise?. I'm sure someone on here will know direction of rotation?.
Alan.

Perspex cover can be removed with speedo housing on car, but facia panel must be removed first.
As it is a Veglia instrument, it will have four tabs around the sheet metal frame that holds the perspex in place, rather than the two self tapping screws on the Jaeger instruments.
You will immediately notice what I mean as soon as you remove the facia panel. It will also be necessary to loosen the speedo unit in order to free the upper tabs.

The needle can be removed by pulling it fairly strongly off its spindle. You have to find a way of marking its position in relationship to the aluminum disc, or else find a way to recalibrate the speedo when you put the needle back.

All speedo cables rotate clockwise as you view the speedo end of the cable when sitting on driver's side. There is no reversing mechanism inside the instrument, nor any can be fitted. However, the fact that the drive comes from the gearbox secondary shaft, and there are two opposite turning gearboxes (3-bearing and 5-bearing engines) makes it necessary to have two opposite cut worm gears so that the cable will always turn clockwise, no matter if mated to a left- or right-hand turning gearbox.
If someone had fitted a worm gear/angle drive pair from a left-hand turning gearbox on a right-hand turning one, or vice versa, the result would have been what you experience.
So you have to find the correct worm drive and angle gear for your gearbox and fit them. It can be done without removing the gearbox from the car.

Hi thanks for that ,I've just got an email from a guy at speedy cables ,he said if I were to put an angle drive behind the speedo ,it should resolve the problem .
Thanks mark
