Squeal when engine turned off

I've noticed a couple of times now that when the ignition is switched off, there is a short squealing sound as the engine stops turning.

Any ideas what this could be? It doesn't happen every time I turn the engine off, but I'm worried it might be something serious.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response!

Does this mean that the belt needs replacing? Or is it OK to leave it?

Thanks again.

To test if it's the belts, squirt a little WD40 on the belts when the engine is running and then immediately switch the engine off. If the noise has gone then it's the belt/s. They could just need tightening!

When I last replaced my belts because they were squealing, I found that both had loads of missing teeth. It's amazing that they worked for so long without snapping!

Thanks Steve and Tom, I'll have a proper look and report back!

The wife squeals when I turn off the telly and I still haven't found a cure for it but I might try a drop of that WD40
