Starter motor grinding noise

I'm having some trouble with Felicia's starter motor today. After the engine fires, it makes a horrible grinding noise for a moment, as if it failed to disengage properly. Got any suggestions? At the moment, it looks as though I'll have to take the starter out to examine it, and that sounds like a tricky job judging by the Haynes manual.

Take it out and get it repaired before it destroys your flywheel. Any "Rewinds" speacialist should be able to fix it for £30

They aren't that bad to remove. Bottom bolt is the most fiddly. I modified a ring spanner to fit by grinding it a bit slimmer. After that all you need to do is remove the brace between the engine mount and engine and it will pop out. Though yours is LHD and the steering column gets in the way a bit. I think that needs disconnecting from the rack but I've not done one.

Yes it's a lot easier if you disconnect the steering column and remove the brace as you said Malcolm then it's quite simple.

Dont forget to disconnect the battery first

Sounds as if it's just gummed up with dust from the clutch and not disengaging when it should. You'll soon see when you remove it!

I took mine out, also a left hand drive. The exhaust manifold has to come out as well. Took me about an hour
