Starter Motor Left Hand Thread?

Good day

I haven't been on here for a while, mostly cos my van's been running like a top, 100 to 250km's a day city driving.

My staff and I love her to bits!

Starter motor has packed up a few times now, but she push starts so easily that it hasn't even slowed us down!

The chap who does all my starters and alternators pointed out to me the left handed thread at the end of the armature which we've never seen anything attached to.

We figure it might be for a washer of sorts to limit the travel back and forth as it moves to and fro(is that correct english?)

Can't find a bolt for it anywhere.

I'm now considering doing a helicoil insert with a normal right handed thread and installing a bolt with loctite if necessary.

Am I on the right path here?

Thanking all you learned gentlemen in advance.

John

Yes you are right, it has a left-hand M6 bolt, and a large washer, and if my memory serves me correctly, a coil spring. They are there for the reason you guessed, to limit axial armature movement.
In theory the bolt is not subject to major torque, so the Loctite solution should work fine. In practice, it "may" come loose, but will not go anywhere, as there is a sheet metal cap behind it. Just try it, you have nothing to lose, considering your starter had been running without this bolt all that time!
