Starting problem

returning to my van from the village shop, I got in and when I turned the key, the ignition lights all came on but the starter would not engage. Is this likely to be a problem with the ignition switch or the solenoid/ starter motor? I am not sure which type of starter I have, but it looks like a nightmare to remove. There has been no warning of this or intermittent working. The starter spins very well, so I do not think that is the problem. Feels more like a solenoid issue?
Any advice gratefully received.

The solenoid is part of the starter motor and would need removal for acess try tapping starter with hammer as worn brushes no longer have enough spring tension to pass current better still with an assistant to turn key at same time
This also stops solenoid as it needs the brushes to complete circuit
If your van is right hand drive 1108 it's not too bad and provided you have got the later shorter starter can be done without removing manifold
LHD will involve further swearing although easier on 845 engines
Last thought there is a feed wire coming from bulkhead with a connection slim possibility of poor connection
And it is possible to temporarily run a 12v test wire from battery to this connection
I personally never had starter switch problems but this test would eliminate it
Make sure car out of gear as I ran myself over last year ☺

Thanks mr Reno.
Before investigating the starter and solenoid I decided to have a look at the starter/ignition switch end. I disconnected the wires and shorted the connections and hey presto, the starter spins as usual. Must be the ignition switch i guess, so I will see how to remove it and if possible to get another one.

That is most unusual only problem I've ever had with switch is worn out and key jamming
Or return spring failure so starter stays on unless turned back by hand

Looked at the ignition switch in some despair at the prospect of lying upside down and trying to get it out of the tube it is in and decided to clean the contacts in the four way connector while I gathered enthusiasm. Pushed it back together and it started on the key. So, nothing more than a poor connection. We live and learn.....
