Steering Rack Gaiter Kit ebay - easy fit??

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking urgently for a gaiter for my 1128 - I'm in Portugal.

I noticed these on ebay, they look proper money

I know the vendor says categorically not, but would they fit a 1128?

When I find one, is it an easy DIY fix.

Don't waste your money - the genuine part is available from Renault. The rack on the early 4's are completely different from the GTL and that is completely different from the R5 and so on.
Easy enough to put a new one on if you have some mechanical knowledge, otherwise entrust to a garage. Takes a max of half an hour providing everything comes undone easily.

I'll nip down to the local shop tomorrow.

As long as it's just spanners and undoing, I should be OK.

It failed the MoT on the gaiter and the Warning Triangle not being manufactured in Portugal!

They would have let the gaiter go, but the Triangle blew it.

Steve, the "late type" gaiter for steering racks with a balljoint on the track rod (post 1978) is the same for all cars, be it R1123, R1128 or even R5-R6.

Angel, I was referring to the early type gaiters without the removeable track rod end. The applications mentioned in the ebay auction pointed towards the early type. I have noticed that some sellers don't actually know what the item they are selling fits so my advice is to play safe. If the seller showed photos of the actual item rather than a cardboard box then at least the buyer could identify whether the item would suit the car.

Sounds like a great idea if just for the installation tool, slap the gaiter in the microwave whilst the good ladies not looking and drop it right on!

Or in my case drop it in the microwave in the workshop, (its all it gets used for I think)

Hi Steve, would you happen to know if rack gaiters are still available from Renault for my 1986 GTL? I know it's 11 years on but the local Renault parts department shuts at 5. Also, might they have a pair of rear shock absorbers? Anyone know the OEM part numbers for these two items please? Thanks. Cars just failed its MoT...
