Hi all,
In the past I've had a problem with leakage from the oil seals of my gearbox and engine.
I sorted the problem by cutting 3-5 mm from the spring that's inside the rubber seal.
Today I did the same thing as a precaution on a new seal that goes into the back differential of my Sinpar project.
This how it's done.
Take the spring out of the rubber seal. That's easy enough. Just lift the lip and roll the spring out.
Locate the place where the spring connects with itself and twist counterclockwise.
The spring is now disconnected.
You'll see a tapered end and the the other flat end where the tapered end twists into.
Take pair of nippers and cut 3-5mm of the flat end of the spring.
To make a round spring again, take both end and twist the tapered end slightly counterclockwise and put it in the cut end and let it twist itself in place.
Place the spring back behind the lip in the oil seal.
Now the seal sits slightly tighter around the axles, with less chance of oil seeping from the seal.
It goes without saying that the axle should be nice and smooth.
