Using a wheeled hydraulic jack....... Use the curved cross member bolted transversely to the chassis at the front situated under the gearbox as your lifting point. Raise vehicle carefully...... now you can easily place your axle stands under the front floor bulkhead corners adjacent to the front jacking fittings. It's best to use wood pads to cushion/spread load...... Many thanks to Mr Reno 139 for this useful tip.:)

This is an easy method to get your GTL PROPERLY SUPPORTED ON AXLE STANDS - before you inspect/work underneath - WORK SAFELY...... Always apply handbrake/chock rear wheels/work on level ground.

I understand Mr Reno also mentioned this is a Renault approved jacking position. It's amusing - having worked in the design of more modern cars, there's a guy in the test team who wanders around underneath with a trolley jack at the prototype stage and works out where mechanics might jack the car, then he badgers the design team until those bits are made strong enough to actually support the weight of the car. Maybe those people were around whan the R4 was made.

I've never used the engine crossmember as a jacking point - partly because I wasn't aware it was strong enough, but also I prefer the chassis to be supported on axle stands under the front chassis members, and a jack under there would get in the way of the stands. Normally I put the jack under bits of wood under the sills.

I have always used this cross bar then axle stands under the chassis near the wishbones. It is a bot more difficult at the back the jack needs to lift about 3 ft!
