:yellowre: right I've broken a part on the lower suspension and I may need to replace it, but that means I got to mess with the Torsion bar, which is new to me and the Haynes manaul say don't touch. has any one done any work with it? any tips on how to remove the lower arm without loosing my fingers and then put it back on.

If it's a GTL the method is to release most of the tension on the torsion bar by disconnecting all the suspension balljoints and driveshaft, then use a torsion bar tensioning tool (ordinary spanner won't grip the 8 side nut) to hold the remaining tension while the rear attachment is removed. From there the whole suspension unit can be removed by the 4 bolts holding the unit to the chassis.

It's probably easier to replace the suspension unit with a secondhand one rather than trying to get the torsion bar out of the old one.

I'd carefully drill and tap that stud and use a bolt instead.

hi had a quick look at the lower arm in my workshop and the bolt you have snapped off apeears to have been pressed into lower skin of steel before it was assembled and from memory there is not enough metal thickness if you drill broken stud out to retap for a bolt
certainly not on the one i was looking at yesterday

thinking back a long way seem to remember drilling hole in oblong strip of metal just right size to be able to fit inside hole in lower arm then finding 7mm dia bolt and welding bolt head through plate effecteviley making a new stud to drop down inside hole
long plate will wedge against swivel to stop rotation allowing it to be tightend
would draw you a picture if i could think of a way to post it without scanner

have fun paul

would also advise against dismantling torsion bars with out experience
