Something for all!

9,935 people have already signed. Let's take it over 10,000 signatures

THE PETITION AIMS TO ...

Restore a rolling 30 year-old exemption to VED, for classic vehicles
Responsible department: Her Majesty's Treasury

Re-introduce a 30 year rolling vehicle excise duty exemption scheme, for classic vehicles. For too long now the tax exemption of classic cars has been frozen, to only apply to those manufactured before 1973. History did not simply stop in 1972. These are not cars which are driven everyday but rather on sunny weekends, to attend enthusiast shows etc.. It is vitally important that we help to preserve this important part of British motoring history.

Had already signed the first one it seems, but done the second one too!

Bit daft them having two epetitions going on at the same time!

Don't they need 100,000 signatures before it even starts to get looked at?

I was quoted in an article in Classic Car Buyer the other week on why I am against this. My reasons are thus -

- Its never going to happen. Not in the current economic climate anyway.

- If it did happen, there is absolutely no way on this earth that 'free tax' won't come with some attached downside. I'd imagine that any cars in the 'historic' tax category would end up with some sort of restriction on use be that mileage / modifications not permitted / daily use / geographic area or some other.

- I don't really want to have my car treated differently to any other. I want to be able to use my car when and where I want and I'm happy to make the RFL to that end. R4s aren't expensive anyway.

I just can't ever imagine this happening and even if it did then I'm 100000% certain it would come with strings attached.

Well they claim they are ending the war on motorists :D

If they did just start it going again at 40 years that would probably be best as then there wouldn't be a leap. (and how many 1974 cars are they worried about the money from!)

(I personally think 40 or 50 years would be a better benchmark not sure why just feels like bigger mile stones)

Good points, Lobster.

What I do find annoying though is that I pay more tax for the 4 (which is not driven much now) than for our other car. So per mile, we are paying a lot more for the 4 in tax.

Pure coincidence?

The petition just topped 10,000 A rise of around 70 overnight, about the number of people viewing this thread.

Will it make a difference? Probably not. But perhaps this demonstrates the power of the web and forums such as this. Whilst many of us are now personal friends having met at events there are a lot of people out there watching and reading our views. All are welcome, please sign up and broaden our conversation.

Happy Friday.
