URGENT WONT START

help needed went to go town put key in turned it nothing,hasnt been started in week

Battery flat?

Do any lights come on the console?

nothing happens but a click,tried jumping it from another left other car ticking over then three lights came on dash ,then nothing else .left it bit longer then nothing

It's probably the starter motor then by the sound of it, my son's did that a few weeks ago, replaced the starter and started straight away.

stuck my head in and saw that there seems to be a cable hanging loose around the alternator only one cable going into alternator and a brown one hanging loose with a black square plastic thingy on end is this the cause could someone have pulled it out? trying to upload pic

is that the starter or alternator?

That's the Alternator, tighten the connections and try again if not probably starter then, the starter is under the manifold and steering arm ( a pain to do on a LHD ) and time consuming i know my son's is LHD, it's easier to take the manifold off.

more likely to be the battery. the easiest thing to do is get someone to check your battery charge for you with a multimeter. you can get one for under10 Euros. Also remove your battery cables, clean them up and re-tighten them. I had that problem a few weeks ago

You can also knock on the starter with a hammer while somebody other turns the key. Sometimes the starter is just "stuck"!

Here is a photo of the rear of my Alternator. You should have more than just 2 wires and those should all be tight.

Sounds as if the alternator is not charging the battery. When it was working was the ignition light constantly on within the console?

got the battery out stuck him on charge overnight ,in he went back in following morning a little on the choke off we went ,been out three days with him and its fantastic ,today took him up the mountains and down some very steep roads,he didn't let us down heres a pic thanks for all the help,im sure ill need more along our journey together

took him out for a drive ,window was very steamed up put fan blower on and turned a little knob under gear stick ,had some white smoke coming from under bonnet on drivers side ,turned blower off no more smoke,under gear stick there is two black knobs look like they turn up and down and two white arrows ,can someone help me Renault 4tl thankyou is it water level off heater or something not sure what these controls are for

One knob you push/pull to set the air flow, the other you twist to set the heat. Not sure what caused the smoke though!
