Using a R4 engine in a Dauphine Gordini

Hello
I came across an old tread from 2004 about using a R4 engine in a Dauphine. We are trying to figure out a solution for a seized engine in a Dauphine Gordini 670-05. I am not sure what the year of manufacture is. We were considering locating an R4 engine but after reading the posts I believe we may have a problem with the engine rotation. Is there any options you can suggest. Thanks Joe

We had discussed this topic some times in the past. It's true Dauphine engine rotates clockwise as viewed from rear (timing gear) end, while R4 and R5 Ventoux engines rotate the opposite way. To make such an engine fit, almost everything except for the block, head and sump needs to be replaced with right hand turning (Dauphine) parts. In addition, there is always the problem of crankshaft mounted dynamo pulley on the Dauphine (on the R4 the crankshaft does not come out of the timing cover), and absence of engine mounting plate at the rear end of the block. Post-66 R4 blocks are rather different than earlier, and also Dauphine ones, regarding camshaft drive and cylinder liner spigots, and finding an early R4 engine may be as hard as, or harder, than sourcing Dauphine parts.
Strangely enough, fitting a transversely mounted Cleon engine (Renault 9/11, Super 5 etc) is simpler - still some work needed, though, and would spoil originality if it's a priority.
