Wandering 4

Hi guys, my little gtl is due for an MOT soon.

My concern is the way its wanders off to the right significantly when you lift off throttle, this is especially dodgy when changing gear.

There doesnt seem to be much play in the track rod ends, what could it be?

cheers

Jim

There is a stay bar that connects from the lower wishbone to the front of the chassis. It's got a rubber bush at the end that can disintegrate. It's most likely the one on the right side. Otherwise if the top or bottom balljoints are worn they could cause the problem.

I had a Fiat Fiorino van that did something similar and that turned out to be a broken engine mount. When you accelerated it pulled to the left and when you slowed it pulled to the right, made for rapid progress through roundabouts though!
Hope you get it sorted.

I would bet a top ball joint (although it would make a knocking noise, too). The Fiat Fiorino has a transverse engine and torque reaction from the engine can affect steering, but it is not true for the R4 since the engine is longitudinally mounted and any defect on the mountings would cause the engine to rotate at a right angled axis to the front axle.
