Last night I gapped the points on the clan ti 16 thou and gapped the Tappets at 6 and 8 and now it takes forever to start when it's cold but is 'usual' orherwise. What have I done wrong?

The points were slightly closed up before as the 16 thou gauge dragged through

I reckon someone came round in the night and has fiddled with it

What condition are your points in? Did you also adjust your timing? It sounds like it could be advanced a little.

No I didn't adjust the timing. It's set precisely to pink very slightly when going up a steep hill in 4th. That's how I achieve 60mpg.

I think I will close them up again

I read in one of your earlier posts that you get 60mpg. Unbelievable, but quite honestly the pinking would drive me mad because that means that the timing is incorrect.
But I suppose if you get 60mpg you're happy to live with it.
Your carb is probably set very lean??

It is set to pink only when going up hill fast in top gear. I find this the best setting for it. After a tweak yes it is carb related.

You can burn your valves out if the mixture is too lean.

Reset and is now puuuurrrrrfffeeecccctttt again.

Next niggle to sort out is the hesitance on fast acceleration up through the gears, (worse when cold) (although i suspect this is down to the carb being a 28IF with out acccelerator pump)
and the second niggle is, when crusing at 100-120kph if i lift off to slow down or brake its like it takes a breath or has a big mis fire but i suspect this to be carb related too.

I am keeping my eye out for the R5 type 32 carb.

What had done wrong is adjust the choke speed linkage so that it revved higher on choke because when cold it has a habit of sucking the choke flap open and by the time I get to the end of my road it cuts out and I have to pull the choke out again.

So I speed the choke speed up to idle faster at less choke.

But the fussy French thing didn't like it so I have put it back

That's another thing wrong with mine... Too advanced and carb never seems to behave the same from day to day. More redex!
