Little tricky to describe, its coming from the front of the car and is like a, low pitch, squeaky door being opened and closed rapidly. It appears on deceleration or acceleration and is present permanently if coasting. It disappears when on a light throttle or when going around a right hand bend, reappears when straightening up but doesn't get any worse going around a left hand bend. I have no detectable play on either front wheel or drive shaft. where do I start? Thanks for any advice.

Sounds like a wheel bearing. Even if there is no detectable play. You might be able to feel a roughness when rotating the hub by hand, or by applying a screwdriver/stethoscope.

Or perhaps a dry universal joint. Have you checked all the gaiters for splits?

Hi Gordon, thanks for the input. A wheel bearing was my first choice, I had a quick check but no play on the wheel but given your suggestions I'll take a closer look, check for roughness and stethodriver it. Gaiters are undamaged. Cheers George

Hi George

Sounds like a dry bottom ball joint. If the bottom ball joint rubber bellow has split this will lead to a loss of grease over time/or old ball joint grease has degraded.

With the car stationary, place both hands flat on the top of the front wing and bounce the wing firmly in a downwards direction a few times. If you hear the squeak, the most likely culprit is the bottom ball joint. To make double sure, Jack up the car, turn the wheel outwards to gain access to the bottom ball joint, you can do a visual check of the rubber bellow whilst your in the vicinity. If the bellow is still intact, gently lift up the bellow (without allowing it to come adrift completely) and spray wd40 under the rubber using the straw provided to get right under the rubber. Take the car for a spin, if the noise goes, you will know it is the ball joint. Another tell tale sign it is the ball joint: it often becomes apparent during a long dry spell, the noise can disappear when driving in wet conditions.

My suggestion is for diagnosis/a temporary solution, long term, I would advise changing the ball joint.
