When I accelerate the pinking stops.......or does it?

Evening Chaps,

Thought I might get a bit of tech guidance before all attention is steered towards the Southern hemisphere.

I self-diagnosed slight pinking. Sounded like leaves stuck in the radiator. I think this is correct.

I read all threads on pinking and did the following:

  1. Retarded my timing from 7 degrees BTDC back to 4 degrees BTDC, using my brand new strobe light. (making sure to replace the vacuum pipe after testing)
  2. upgraded to SP98 petrol from SP95
  3. Changed the oil and made sure its topped up
  4. Checked the points gap.

Thats it and its still a little pinky, however when I accelerate hard the pinking seems to disappear?

Q: Is that possible?
Q: Should I retard the timing even more?

Cheers

My pinking seems to have disappeared, could be either moving the air intake to a cooler position or 98 octane fuel.

Hi Sprackers, pinking occurs usually at low revs, when your timing is too retarded. You need to just concentrate on your distributor. Loosen it and turn it a fraction anti-clockwise. that means that you're advancing your timing.

Hi Mojo

Yes Anti clockwise is Advancing (A.A. is how I remember and C.A.R is how I remember Clockwise AND Retard)

But I have bought a strobe to get it to +/- 6degrees as specified in books and websites.

OK will try that cheers and will report back.

Using my ear I advanced the distributor and heard the engine naturally speed up as i did so.

I advanced it until it started to misfire then twisted it back just a touch.

Tightened it all up.

I then checked to see where my timing was , out of curiosity, with the strobe and found it to be around 9°.

The pinking has reduced I think, I am listening so hard now I dont know if it me or the car???

Cheers Mojobaby.

Criket itaht would be an enormous job. I will read up on that right now.

In the mean time I have advanced it a little more and there is still a little pinking.

More test runs and more adjustments.
