Which oil filter.

I have a R4 GTL of 1982. How can I find out which of the two oil filter threads I have?

And does someone know the size and material of the sealing ring which should be changed when changing the oil? Actually I have never changed that, I wonder where to find a new one.

The easiest way would be to drain the oil and remove the filter, and then pay a visit to your nearest motor factor, with the filter and drain-plug. They should be able to match up the filter and supply you with a new drain-plug sealing washer, usually made of copper and fibre, its compressable. Remember to refill the engine with 20/50 good quality mineral oil.

Hi Gocogi, its very possible that your oil filter will have the thread size printed on the outside of the filter. It will read something like M20x1,50 which is a metric thread.
But as Cornish says, rather take it with you when you buy a new one so you can get the same size filter.

Hi GoCoGi, there are various 20/50 grade oils on the market, designed specifically for classic cars, and I'm sure they are available in Germany. Again maybe your motor factor can advise you on this, or other forum members from Germany can perhaps help. One name that comes to mind is Castrol Classic 20/50, that should be available over there, but I'm sure there is a German equivalent.
Maybe go in line and check out a classic VW parts supplier, as over here they sell oil too.

PS, I just checked out the Der Franzose website, they do Gulf 20/50 and also Yacco 15/50, both are suitable for your engine. Good luck, Brian.

The filter should be FRAM PH 2874 or equivalent (the change was around 1984). I prefer to use 15/40 (a less heavy oil) which makes the engine easier to start in the winter. It is more readily available than 20/50.

I guess it depends where you live Malcolm. I reckon your winters are colder in Cambridgeshire than down here in balmy Cornwall  So here 20/50 is fine. Hmm, Germany? Maybe a thinner oil is better for cold morning start ups.

If the car is pre 84 on original engine it will have 3/4 English thread
If it's 84 on wards on original engine it will have metric m20 thread
Depending on oil filter manufacturer it may be written on outside or internally by threads
Be aware the larger metric on will fall of going up the road with disastrous results if screwed on early engine
Not all application charts are accurate and fail to mention difference
There was originally a green label on rocker cover on later engines warning mechanics
