Renault 6 - orientation course - Steering

I hope someone can help, and apologies in advance for my extreme ignorance and novice questions.
One of the steering gear boots was burst so I have removed the steering "rack" in order to replace same, and generally check it all out. I am glad I did as the bushes at both ends are in need of replacing. However at the tail end of the removal job - releasing the last two bolts to the sub-frame, with the nut end blind, out dropped these shims(?). Can anyone please advise how these should be properly remounted.

Your name suggests Scottish blood! I am rapidly falling in love with my R6 here in Catalunya,. Some of the design is really refreshing, but coming as I do from Scotland, being able to strip her down without a fight is proving a rare treat!
That said she is a filthy bisom!! 50 years without so much as a wet wipe!

Yes, my father's family came from Shotts, in Lanarkshire. Whenever we go to Scotland (not often enough), it feels like home...

I am frae Hamilton, used to take the 56 Shotts bus! Indeed if you fell asleep on the last bus that was an unfortunate outcome!

If I remember there should be ‘ memory marks ‘ on the shims as to where they were fitted.

Interesting Ian. I wasnt even at all certain where they sat though its pretty obvious. As you say with the amount of muck on them there position should have been self evident before I cleaned them up! Though in all seriousness you matbe can still make out the outline

Hi Thanks for the reply.
I had 5 Mk 1 5’s and that’s where I especially remember removing the Steering Racks during Clutch Change’s.
I remember there was plenty of adjustment!
