I hope someone can help, and apologies in advance for my extreme ignorance and novice questions.
One of the steering gear boots was burst so I have removed the steering "rack" in order to replace same, and generally check it all out. I am glad I did as the bushes at both ends are in need of replacing. However at the tail end of the removal job - releasing the last two bolts to the sub-frame, with the nut end blind, out dropped these shims(?). Can anyone please advise how these should be properly remounted.

thanks in advance.

Merci Andy!
Your name suggests Scottish blood! I am rapidly falling in love with my R6 here in Catalunya,. Some of the design is really refreshing, but coming as I do from Scotland, being able to strip her down without a fight is proving a rare treat!
That said she is a filthy bisom!! 50 years without so much as a wet wipe!

You're welcome!
Yes, my father's family came from Shotts, in Lanarkshire. Whenever we go to Scotland (not often enough), it feels like home...
Good luck with the car!

I am frae Hamilton, used to take the 56 Shotts bus! Indeed if you fell asleep on the last bus that was an unfortunate outcome!

Hi.
If I remember there should be ‘ memory marks ‘ on the shims as to where they were fitted.
Ian
Interesting Ian. I wasnt even at all certain where they sat though its pretty obvious. As you say with the amount of muck on them there position should have been self evident before I cleaned them up! Though in all seriousness you matbe can still make out the outline

Hi Thanks for the reply.
I had 5 Mk 1 5’s and that’s where I especially remember removing the Steering Racks during Clutch Change’s.
I remember there was plenty of adjustment!
Kind Regards
Ian.

bushings are out for delivery so should be here in a week or so! Murder getting parts here, what with not having a postal etc. Autodoc. es is the obvious go to, a kind of consolidator, but no hint of a delivery date when you buy now, and shipping twice the price of the part. Its a proper test of patience. Meanwhile keeping amused removing 50years of kak from the top of the gearbox.

This company has a lot of 4 and 6 parts:

Used piezasautoclassicos repeatedly during my 4 ownership over here in Spain, can only recommend them here, shipping to me tip of NW has always come through on time, using standard correo shipping, only time things went longer was when I used the express courier service (DHL) on an order, parts took 2/3 weeks and lots of tracking detail false crap and automated DHL answer machines. Piezas had already agreed to reship order, when order came through obviously didn’t need to reship but refunded extra shipping for ‘fast delivery’
Good place to deal with here.

yes laxeian thank you for this. I have had poor response via autodoc so I actually placed a second order via https://pepepiezas.com which amusingly has a logo that vaguely resembles a pizza. They seem to be switched on, but as of Thursday am, still no bushings since Saturday's orders,.. I will check your guys out for sure. I also went to Renault with the part no. and the only dealership with it in stock was in NW by coincidence in Pontevedra, but having already bought 4 I held back!

Think your see your order by the weekend, tbh learn’t here next day/48, 3/4 days is all the same, about a week, find if I go with that expectation I’m not usually disappointed.

Pleased to report the steering rack went back in with its new bushings without too much fuss whatsever. I now have a few spares, but no hardship. Successfully flushed and replumbed the cooling system and my carb is working a treat after the rebuild, so all in all the first pass on known issues has been a great success.
Now I am preparing for the roadworthiness test, which calls for new tyres all round and an oil change which is probably overdue.
Then all being well its a few minor cosmetics, oh and seats. I am out in search of new front seats. The original material is past its best, but I see new covers are bloody expensive! Not sure how to sort the rear bench.

Thanks very much Andy.
Such a strange day yesterday. I got in my old merc to take it to the MOT/ITV station, and the engine warning light came on. First time ever, and a fail. However as I was driving back I stopped off at a local scrap yard, to discover an almost entire R6 with a lovely clean interior, and seats with headrests! An hour later I was back home with them, and the light on the mercedes went out, so far not to come back on. I am heading back to the R6 for the inertia reels, the carpet and maybe the carb, but if anyone is struggling to find something particular, give us a shout and I can check.
