1986 GTL for sale. SOLD

For sale my 1986 Renault 4 GTL with less than 32,000 miles on the clock!

This car was first registered in Jersey in 1986, was owned by some Nuns (I am told) and then an enthusiast for many years. The car was then bought and transferred to the Isle of Man where it enjoyed occasional use. I purchased the car in May, shipping it to the mainland, registering it as a UK vehicle and having it MOT tested.

I suspect the reason it's in such good condition is that it had been garaged for most of its life and undersealed. from early on. It has never had any welding work carried out as far as I can tell and the chassis and body appear solid and original.

The previous owner spent a lot of attention to the running gear, replacing the following-
• rear brake cylinders
• rear brake shoes
• master cylinder
• all suspension bushes
• shock absorbers
• exhaust track rod ends
• upper and lower ball joints
• inner steering rack arms
• CV gaiters
• a set of new tyres!

He also serviced it earlier this year (oil, OF, AF, plugs, valve clearances, coolant)

My contribution to this car's condition has been to -
• fit a Boyer Bransden electronic discharge ignition unit.
• replace the rotor arm and distributor cap
• fit abs wheel arch liners all round
• wax inject all chassis cavities
• check and treat any rust areas on the floor pan (there was some surface rust only - no perforations - which was treated and sealed, with new soundproofing)
• fit a new clutch cable (£60!!)
• renew both front discs and pads.

The car is in excellent and original condition inside and out. The only downside is that some of the door seals are getting old and may need replacing, if you are fussy about that sort of thing, and the heated rear window is intermittent.

So why am I selling it? I have no previous history of R4s and although I have enjoyed using it, I have not developed the passion that some people have for these characterful little cars..As I have no garage, I suspect it would just spoil. It is a car that deserves an enthusiastic owner.

I have included a selection of pics of the car - there really are no bad points to it. The price required (£3000) reflects the general increasing value of a car of this quality - a couple of higher mileage examples have actually auctioned for more on e-Bay recently. Remember, this car will require no work doing, it is local to an awful lot of people (it's not in Serbia etc - we're right by J13 of the M25) so collection won't require a long journey and a trailer. It is taxed and MOT'd till May. You can just drive it away.

To soften the blow a little, I will include with the sale the Haynes manual, brand new ball joints top and bottom for both sides, a brand new head gasket set, air filter, track rod ends and two new tyres.

If you're local enough, come and have a look and a drive. If you are farther away, send in an AA inspector, or see if Renospeed will come out and do a report for you. Either PM me, or phone me on 01784 458034

Many thanks to all the peeps who phoned, tyre kicked and offered wads of hard currency for the above - I was really taken aback! This being the cold, quiet, non buying season and all.

The 4 has gone to live a more pastoral life in Ulster, an altogether more fitting place for a 4 than the M25 zone.

Oh, and if you are selling, watch out for a plonker from Leicester who is, apparantly, looking for a 4 for his wife. This plank didn't have the basic ability to even release the bonnet, yet pronounced himself expert enough to tell my wife that the car had been resprayed (it hadnt) and due to uneven shut lines around the doors (!!!) thought the car had been in a major accident. Care in the community perhaps?

Obviously, I wont be on this forum so much now, so thanks to all those who have helped me, and to those that I helped, I feel I have "paid my rent here"

Finally, I still have a soft spot for Bluebell's Blanche. There must be tablets for my condition! Thanks, everyone.
