I recently acquired a renault 688-06 engine, I have been trying to figure out what vehicle it came out of and have had no luck. The casting number on the cylinder head is 261 if that helps.

Thanks in advance.

The engine is from a Renault R8 Major (R1132) with a 50 bhp Sierra (Cleon) 668-06 1108cc engine.
Good acquirement should be valuable

First, I’m no motor head but trying to learn: I’m posting an attachment to see if I can get validation the overhaul manual, for a Case Skid Steer engine 688, is the same 688 engine as my 1988 R4TL? I’m in the US and R4s was never sold here and getting information on parts, and especially parts, very difficult. A company in Houston carries engine parts outlined in this manual. Would I be safe ordering parts for my engine from this company?

@Jeff your question is actually off-topic but I try to answer anyway.

The 1988 R4 GTL has a 688-12 (1108cc) Cleon engine while a 1988 R4TL has a B1B (845cc) Billancourt engine these engines are different from each other and parts are not interchangeable!

In broad terms both 688 engines (Case skid steer and 1988 R4 GTL) are the same so most parts should be the same as both engines are Renault 688 Cleon engines.
In Europe there are several companies who ship parts worldwide like;
https://www.franzose.de/en/Renault/R4/ or https://www.melun-retro-passion.com/gb/24-r4

But for you Houston might be a bit closer. I'd just email them and send your pictures and measurements from your parts.

The late Spanish-built TLs had an 1108cc Cléon engine - apparently slightly more powerful than the GTL version (38 rather than 34 Bhp).
There's an interesting video here:

Is your TL an import from South America? Does it say 688 on the engine plate?

The engine in your Skid Steer is the 'other way round' - the water pump is at the other end.
Interestingly, there's a 688-02 engine (one of the engines in the manual you posted) on eBay UK at the moment (possibly R8/10?):

If you're finding it difficult to get parts for your car, I could send you a pdf of the parts catalogue - it's much easier to start with a part number. The MK1 5 (Le Car) shared a few parts with the late 4s - parts occasionally come up on eBay USA.

Any chance of some photos?
