Ive got a '84 LHD R4 - tax til end October and MOT til Feb - all fine bar cooling system - replaced hoses and had radiator (expensively) rebuilt but still not happy - seems to have warm water entering the exhaust system and therefore loosing water and lots of smoke from exhaust (layman description but I guess you'll all know what the issue might be) - in the next day or two I'll be deciding whether to sell or not - so if anyone wants an otherwise solid R4 with MOT and a bit of tax please private message me - Michael

Head gasket blown. This would also explain it if you previously had hoses (or radiator) go for no good reason - pressure builds up in the cooling system. Not too expensive to get fixed but I'd advise a head skim at the same time and then all should be fine. My (845cc) had this happen a few years ago and ran much better after the as-described treatment.

Thanks for your post - I will be calling my mechanic in the morning and booking him in for a head gasket and skim - I hope that he is not too busy in the next few days!
