Hi David,
I'm mystified to, tomorrow I'll take a picture of a Renault 4 engine and gearbox. Maybe you can take a picture from the right hand side to. I do think you are mistaking the round hole in the bell house for the front of the engine.
I will do but after studying hard the differences between our engines. The big difference is that my camshaft finishes virtually flush with the block and yours appears to extend about 4 or 5 inches beyond the block.My pulley that bolts to the camshaft drives a belt behind the alternator belt.
I am wrong. After further inspection I have pushed an oil seal into the bell housing not the engine block. Sorry to get you scratching your heads!, so I probably still have my oil leak !
Mystery solved
I was wondering what was going on I guess if the seal is a tight fit it may at least be slowing the oil down a bit but maybe it could drip out behind it slightly
Just tried to find pic of the tool to remove it with gearbox in situ too many books but not the one I needed as think Its in the genuine R6 book
All my 4 books too old for c type engines
Thanks guys, the strange thing was that the seal fit perfectly and the leak appeared to stop but I think the oil must now be going into the bell housing rather than spraying out of the cut out.The solution looks like it might have to be gearbox out and a proper look.
Just for good measure. Here are the pictures I've promised post.
You can clearly see the bell house and slightly darker the engine.
@David Norville
In your case the alternator is blocking your view.
The good thing is that your oil leak is gone for now and there is no need to lift the engine out.
Just wait for another opportunity to set it right.
Or try and find the tool to replace the seal with the engine and gearbox still in place.
