We are taking the 4 to France this year, but Direct Line don't cover cars over 16 years old in Europe, so we will have to arrange breakdown cover with another company.
If you insure with Footman James it includes European recovery as part of the policy...And it works, we were flown back and had the car trailered home from mid France a couple of years ago...Is it a good idea to have your 4 with a modern car company like Direct Line, no agreed value ect?
Stuart, I think that you're right: I've been meaning to change from Direct Line and will do when it's up for renewal. An agreed value makes a lot of sense, plus a bigger discount for the fact that it does less than 1000 miles a year!
Thanks Steve. Unfortunately EuroRescue are ageist too and won't cover cars that are over 15 years old!
AA and RAC European breakdown both cover older cars. I've used AA European cover almost every time I've been abroad (only used them once mind - heavy rain in Monaco gave my Twingo an electrical meltdown so I parked on a carpark that forms part of the GP circuit and waited for a very nice monsieur to come and fix it)
Might be cheaper to cancel and go for classic insurance. Most of the classic policies have European breakdown cover. RCCC have a deal with Footman James, but I find them a bit pricey and they wouldn't insure mine (too many horsepowers) so I'm with RH Clasic Insurance at the moment (£170 for the R4 and the MGA). Haggerty did the pair for £130 but it didn't include driving to work. Can't imagine a standard GTL would be any more than £100.
How about RAC personal cover rather than covering the vehicle?
I'm just considering doing this at the moment as I've been covering just two of our cars separately which was costing us nearly as much as joint RAC cover for Judith and I, which would cover the 3 cars and the camper we own.
