Hello all, I need your wisdom.
My R4 is a late 1100 with the 354 gearbox. After changing the gaiters on the drive shafts on both sides, I'm getting a knocking sound on corners from what I'm fairly sure are the shafts.
For you sleuths, here's what I did.
For its French CT (MoT) it needed new gaiters on the driveshafts or Cardan shafts as they are known here.
I detached the brake calipers, undid the the three ball joints and the hub nut and used a puller to free the end of the shaft from the hub. It came away quite smoothly.
This being a late model, the shafts do not have a pin and they came out easily without any force. A little bit of gearbox oil dribbled out.
I changed the gaiters with the shafts out of the car.
Making sure the gearbox ends of the shafts and the mating surfaces were nice and clean I replaced the shafts and reassembled the hubs etc. and topped up the gear oil.
I took it for a test drive and noted a brake pad dragging on the left front, so I stripped the calliper and found the pot to be a bit grubby but the seal ok. cleaned it and got it running smoothly again, refitted etc.
On the second test drive all seemed well. Later I went a mile to the shop and on the way back I noted a knocking from what seems to the front right driveshaft. It is louder in right-hand corners.
The shaft seemed in good order when I refitted it. It isn't catching on anything and the crimps on the securing bands easily clear the wishbone.
THEN... I read the supplement at the back of the Haynes manual which says that in late models a special tool is needed for mounting and demounting the shafts from the gearbox.
I didn't need a tool to remove the shafts and they went back just as easily. They don't leak gear oil.
What is going on? I'm stumped.
Your thoughts very much appreciated.
