Hi All, I hope you don't mind me putting this here but I have a 2cv I'm trying to sell. This is sort of R4 related in the sense that the available funds will go someway towards getting my GTL back on the road!
1987 Citroen 2cv6 Burgundy Charleston. The car is in excellent condition throughout and was subject to a partial restoration by the Frome 2cv centre back in 2004, when amongst other things a galvanised chassis was fitted. The car appears to have had sparing use since and has just undergone some minor fettling by myself. As such the bodywork remains in excellent shape and the car is on the button and ready to be enjoyed by someone for the rest of the summer. Its has just been through an Mot and is Mot'd until August 15th 2013. The Charleston is not currently taxed (its on Sorn).
I have owned the car for just over a year. The car comes with 2 sets of keys, the v5c in my name and a smattering of old bills and old Mots. The earliest of which is a bill for restoration work at Frome in '04 then old bills etc thereon. The v5c states that I'm the tenth owner but to be honest most 2cv's now have had a similar figure and I would buy more on condition. The odometer states the mileage as just over 60,000 miles which looking at the car feels about correct taking into account the work carried out and remaining original parts.
The body structurally is very sound in all the usual places that 2cv's rust, with no corrosion to deal with now or in the near future. There was a small hole in the nearside front floorpan so I cut the front floorpan end out and replaced it using the correct panel and methods to put it back in as tidily as possible. I also had to repair a small hole in the offside front floorpan and a couple of spots by the nearside rear door.. These have all been done to a high standard and are unnoticeable unless pointed out. The rest of the floors are good, the bonnet hinge and windscreen surround are rot free, the sills are sound both sides and the boot floor, rear sweeps and tail panel are all rot free. The car has a galvanised chassis so that should not present any future problems.
Bodily, the bulk of Fromes restoration work while older is holding up well. As such I would say that the bodywork is in excellent (but not concours) condition. The paint is still very shiny with a deep lustre, but there are some various age related marks worth pointing out. There is a patch of surface rusting on the leading edge of the nearside rear wing. The offside rear wing has some touched in graze type scratches along the lower section and the paint is lightly 'stained' where petrol that has blown out of the filler neck has ran down over the wing face. The top of the offside A panel has been hand touched in and there are some 'cracks' in the rest of the transfer on the same panel. The offside two doors and the bonnet also have lighter but similar 'cracks' (more like scratches) appearing in places that look like they are related to the preparation method before Frome painted the panels.
Overall though these things are quite minor and do not detract from what looks like a very well presented and nicely kept 2cv. The bumpers and headlamp lenses are both very good with minimal desilvering as are the two headlamp shells which are both excellent underneath and on top, and are the original metal ones. At the rear I fitted a set of really quite rare now rear bumper over riders. The rest of the panels on the car are all dent and generally rust free with the exception of the nearside rear door where about half of the sealing strip underneath has come away.
The car has a Matts soft top which is still very tidy and presentable but not quite as bright as it once was. The car sits on four near new genuine Michelin X tyres and the two front wheels are nearly new. I have just comprehensively rebuilt the seats including hessian inserts, new bands, new foam throughout and brand new grey diamond upholstery. The rest of the interior trim is original but still in decent condition.
Mechanically I have done a number of jobs to the car, either while using it, or for the Mot it has just passed. I replaced the offside front kingpin and front brake pads. The engine and gearbox have been degreased and cleaned before I removed and repainted the heat exchangers. I fitted the car with a 123 electrionic ignition and have replaced all 6 of the cardbord heater hoses, as well as give it an oil and filter change (about a mile ago)ready for its new owner. The lining on the bonnet had gone droopy so I have also replaced the bonnet liner.
Overall then the car drives pretty well, but can take a little churning to get it to start. The car drives correctly and feels right with a nice compliant ride. The single fault that this particular car has is that the first time you brake (hardish) eash day you get a noticeable groaning come from the rear brakes. Once its occurred it does not happen again and in no way affects the brakes which otherwise behave as normal. I will try and get the rear hubs off for a good look before the sale ends...
The car is based in the village of Kimpton near St Albans in Herts. I am looking for £3950ono for it. If you want to know any more or arrange to view it then please feel free to pm me or give me a call on 07765 713967. The photos I have are too large to attach so if you would like to see some please get in touch with your email address and I will mail them over to you.
