Just a quick engine swap?

As you can probably tell Richard, I do enjoy doing upgrades and the odd mod or two. I've also fitted electronic ignition and a stainless steel exhaust system. The bigger 32mm carb is a worthwhile mod as it definitely gives the engine a bit more go, if you know what I mean.

Hello Brian, can I ask if you modded the 32mm carb at all please? Regards Tom

Hello Tom. No I've not done any mods to the carb, I just cleaned and rebuilt it, kits are available, and replaced the emissions hoses and restrictor jet.
Regards Brian.

Thanks Brian.

I took the car on a long run yesterday to the Great Western Classic Classic Car Show at Shepton Mallet, a nice 350mile round trip. The weather was atrocious but never mind, it was a good day out. The 4 as usual created a lot of interest, and of course it was the only one there, and now that I've done 1000miles since the engine overhaul, I'm happy to say that all seems good, and my efforts were worthwhile. The classic car park was well filled, the Mk5 Jag in the auction was drop-dead gorgeous, and the Citroen H type van was very nice.20190209_124358.jpg20190209_124511.jpg20190209_142834.jpg20190209_150836.jpg

Thanks for your comments chaps. It's very interesting what you say harbourseal, but I do know she was first registered in 1985, and was supplied new by Liningtons a Renault garage in Portsmouth. I bought her last year from a chap called Nic, "snailshed" on this forum, and as far as I know he bought her from a forum member called "purpaboo". Up until then I've no idea of her history, but I think it might have been a bit chequered, as purpaboo called her "the folly", and she was and still is a bit battered in places. All part of her charm. I assume she was assembled in the Republic of Ireland at Wexford, but where the chassis originated I've no idea.
Regards Brian.

Hi @Cornish4

Glad to see Folly is still alive and well. Great job on the engine replacement!

For some of the back story - she was purchased in August 2009, from a family in the Isle of Wight, and lived with us in Walthamstow for the next couple of years. She ran quite hot, and it was determined that water flow was likely "a bit gunged up" around one of the cylinders. During our ownership, she had a new exhaust and battery, and some minor welding to floors and boot. I replaced the alternator too. The throttle cable broke on a motorway run ... my first experience with a tow truck.

Sold on to @snailshed, who I think fitted the front grille and maybe the wheels.

We now live in Sydney, Australia, and are the humble owners of a ... Renault 16! :-)

Hello purpaboo, nice to hear from you. Thank you for the extra information about the R4. Yes she had an issue with the cooling system when I bought her from Nic in Jan 2017, but she took me to 4L International that year, and the South of France the following year after I replaced the radiator and waterpump. Plus I added a water temp gauge.
By this time the engine was getting past its best, and when I accidentally topped up with diesel early one morning when tiredness got the better of me, it was time to sort it out. I was embarrassed about it, but now hey ho, these things happen.
After replacing the engine, in 2019 she took me down to Uzes again, and a trip to the Dordogne to the R12 birthday party at La Douze, plus the last R4 International at Thenay.
In 22 and 23 I did two epic trips to Italy, the second one included Sardinia. The little car has served me well.
I've continued the retro look that Nic started, mud flaps, roof rack and moustache, and added a few stickers, plus front fog lamps and roof lamps too. She is still attending classic shows, this picture taken recently by a fellow exhibitor at a gathering at Pentewan Sands near Mevagissey. I'm not sure where our next continental trip will take us.
I'm glad to read you are still into classic Renaults with your R16. I can just imagine it cruising down an ocean highway in Oz.
Kind regards Bry FB_IMG_1715031120954.jpg
