Piston rings made by our little workshop

My father is an old craftsman, he has been working on a lathe for over 50 years. We have a small workshop and for last few years we have focused on making piston rings of all kinds. I am an IT engineer (unemployed at the moment) but I have been spending a lot of time in the workshop so I have been learning to work on a lathe. Here is some of my work :)

These are 90 milimeters in diameter, they are used for air compressors.

That's amazing. With the tolerances and materials involved it's hard to believe they can be made in small quantities. Real craftsmanship there.

Thank you. We can achieve tolerances within +-0.01 of a millimeter and odd enough we do it all on a universal lathe. The best thing is we can make the rings according to the wear of a piston ring channel or the cylinder. If the piston ring channel is too bad we can correct it and then make a ring according to the channel. You can't buy that in a shop and thats what keeps us in the business :)

Last month I had a personal message on this forum from a guy in Aberdeenshire. He was asking us to make rings for his 1925 Coventry Swift 10 hp.

He sent us the pistons to correct the piston grooves and make rings according to the new grooves.

After a few days work they were on their way to Scotland.

Interesting to say this is a 4 stroke engine but it has no classic oil ring.
