Plein Air for sale

Very interesting! i know of two genuine Right hand drive Plein airs from a total of 7 [i think ?]. A '' White ''one that belongs to a commitee member of the Renault owners club that turns up regularly at shows and is in lovely condition and a '' Red '' one that is owned by a good friend of mine in Leicester .It is currently off road needing a little recommision work .I have heard of rumours of another but this was beleived to have been a replica mascarading as the genuine article .Not sure how you would go about making sure this one is the real thing ? but i must say from the pictures it does look the genuine article.I have seen another R4 convertible in the U.K but this was a conversion/kit called a Malibu .It had a shortened R4 chassis and body.
If i was personally interested in this car i would view before bidding and a genuine plein air or not ? if i liked the car i would have a bid.End of the day cars like this do not come up to often.

Interesting- it raises the question of what do you call a "genuine" plein aire- Renault used to sell the conversion parts as kits and provide instructions for installing them. I remember as a kid seeing a brochure for them featuring one trimmed with leopard skin rear tonneau and equally leopard-skin trimmed langourous models. Ah, those were the days.......

I have viewed this car and really it is a restoration project, as there is plenty of rust pushing up filler under the fairly new paint. In general the work that has been done to it is of a pretty low standard, so I think the best solution would be to strip it down and start again. There are also specific plein air parts missing: brightwork on side opening area - where the doors used to be, waist trims - which are longer than saloon, and wheel trims. I think it should also have the chrome rear number plate surround. In light of this would anyone care to guess at what a fair value would be? At £1950 currently it seems a little pricey for the condition but the reserve has not been met. It is a lot of work and I can't really afford to end up with another car that is worth less than I have spent on it, but I am very tempted!

Plien Air

Hi guys, I'm the owner of the red Plien Air mentioned in Liams posting.
My car is also for sale and sounds to be in much better condition than the ebay one, for not much more money...
It has been completely rebuilt with all new panels and running gear, new weather equipment ect. Its been in dry storage for several years and I have not run the car for 2 years. It has not suffered and still looks wonderful.
So why is it for sale, well I have now got 7 R4's and it all to much...Also for sale are my superb '67 3 speed all original and can soon be MOT'd, a rust free but tatty LHD 8o's F4, mabe even my top prize of a 73 car with 75 miles from new... yes really...

Hi Stuart, welcome to the forum.

Plein airs are like buses. Well, maybe they are a bit different, but you don't see any for years and then suddenly two are advertised at once. Your collection sounds quite exciting. I don't suppose any of your cars have the holy grail of Renault 4 features - the bench front seat?

Could you start a new topic for your cars so we can give them maximum exposure. Also could you upload some photographs (or e-mail photos to clementine at renault4.co.uk). How much do you want for the cars?

:clementi:

Yes I will try and get time on sunday to post the grim details of my full house of cars...the for sale '67 has a bench seat... and I also have for sale the full insides of a broken '68 car which are in dark maroon red... fantastic condition... including bench seat...

Hi Stuart
Very interested to get details of your Plein Air and your '73 (wow!).
Also you mention a broken '68 - any other parts available?

Hmmmm, bench seat. I'll wait with some excitement for the photos to appear before I ask lots of questions.. Feel free to use the gallery if you have lots of photos.

Re: Plien Air

Hi Stuart,

Do you know one who is selling his Plein Air?

Thanks & bye - Max

Pictures

Hi Stuart,

could you send me some pictures of the Plein Air. In which condition is it? Have you done any restoration work?

Cheers - Max

Sent you some mails but looks like you didn´t get it.
Max

I have just bought a Malibu, based on a 79 chassis it was converted in 92. The seller has owned the car since Feb 88 and it was last on the road in 2006. It needs a service and the brakes sorting but it will be on the road this summer, if we get one. will post some pics when I see it in daylight. Does anyone have any further info on these kits?
Allan
