I have a friend who trained as an aerodynamicist (and also owned a R4 at one point). He reckons the good drag factor for the time is down to the flat floor and the rounded edges at the front. He tried to improve his car even further with a bit of tape over the gutters either side of the windscreen. (It resulted in a bit of rust from water trapped behind the tape so it's not recommended.)
The vans are especially good with side winds. My F6 used to be blown sideways but because the area was concentrated towards the rear it would try to steer itself back to where it should be when hit by an unexpected gust.
