Vintage options?

Yeah I don't mind the shift pattern since I once had a 78 928 (loved that car!) that had the same shift pattern. So I am used to it
Can one fit the GTL engine (1108) with one of these old transmissions or is it too much torque?

if you did fit it you would have 4 reverse gears as engines run oppisite direction !!
may also be a challenge turning crank handle anti clock wise to start it

Wow really? Why would Renault switch the engines rotation? seems counter productive since they would have to build a new transmission as well (cost wise). Well, since I am new with the R4, I learn something interesting every day!

Hehehe... I might have an American passport but I am a true mutt! Born in Switzerland, raised in Florence Italy and spent my tween and teenage years in Venezuela before moving to America... Personally I am a stickler to originality but since rust will be my enemy in my choice I have to go with the best car I can afford. That might lead me to a later (post) hand crank model so I would most likely replace the transmission with and earlier type. (I am sticking to the 850) The only other mods I would think of doing (for safety) is the disk breaks, a bit more hp with the engine (to keep up with traffic) and since I am in Miami it would be nice to have the sun roof!
And if the R4 gods like me enough a Sinpar!
I have been looking at the the Mexican market for R4's. I started with the Colombian market but since I know the type of weather and road conditions those cars have been facing all their lives I switched to an more desert type climate to do a search. But I think my best bet will be a European market model. Mexico has some pretty bad roads as well!

A few more options....

I spotted a few more options in the "4L Magazine" - some more useful than others.....
First a lovely set of rubber interior door protectors, making the opening of the door more comfortable and protecting the paint at the same time !
Secondly (a poor photo I'm afraid) showing a variety of official options in 1968, ranging from an emergency windscreen which inflates to fit, a fine selection of bags and a ski rack costing 209 FF for the 4 ski version ......

That's true, but it's not hard to bump-start an R4 if you have even a slight slope to roll down.

Just received in the post # 37 Gazoline magazine! Wow great mag history on the R4 (pre 71) they even have an options section showing bumper over-riders, mud flaps, hubcaps stamped to look like wire wheels, lots of chrome bits (for the door handles, fuel cap, etc.), rear window blind, Muffler cap extension, and rear reverse light on the rear bumper and a few other things. My French reading skills are not as good as they used to be but I should be proficient by the time I finish reading the whole magazine!
I know there might be a copyright law here but can I snap a photo of the photos and post them?
