Continental R-Engine parts needed

Hello, new to this forum. I was given an old Toro Groundsmaster 72. The owner knew nothing about the mower as it was in a trade he made. it was setting out in the woods behind the house for maybe several years. I brought it home and started working on it. So far i haven't spent any money on it. the ignition switch was frozen and several other things like lingage were frozen. I removed the muffler, alternator and waterpump. the water pump is wobbly and when i took it off some bbs fell out. my question is---where do i find parts for this machine. i would love to restore it---btw--the engine is not froze up. i know i will need a water pump but I can't find it on the internet. I appreciate any help. this is the info i found on the frame: Continental R - Engine; Model: 839-46; spec number: 15/2005; and serial number is 8252. Also it would be helpful to know the age of this mower. I suspect it is like maybe in the early 80s?

These engines are similar to Renault 4 engines with some differences. It might be easier if you take a photo of the water pump and post it on the forum to see if it is configured exactly in the same way as the Renault 4.

Hi
There've been a few posts about these machines/engines on the forum - I have to start by saying that I don't have any experience of them, though.
This manual will be useful: https://www.toro.com/getpub/7473
There's a complete engine for sale here - https://www.renault4.co.uk/forum/threads/continental-r-engine.12137/
If the water pump is the same as the one fitted to R4s with similar engines, they're fairly easy to find in the UK or mainland Europe.
Is your pump like this one?
Good luck, and best wishes for 2025!

I attached some pdf files including the toro lawnmower engine overhaul manual.
It's indeed the Renault 839 engine with 782cc which gives 47.8 cu in. produced from 1971 'till 1982
By the way, all Continental R engines are Renault R4 engines either R800, R839, (Billancourt engine) or R688, R810 (Cleon engine).
Parts are easily found here on the main continent in France at https://www.melun-retro-passion.com/gb/24-r4

Don't know the overall construction of a lawnmower or skid steer loader with Renault R4 (Continental R) engines, but could it be the governor assembly?
The things we do very well know are our beloved and precious R4 cars ;)

Not to steal your post, anybody knows if the Bernard-branded motors (I've only found them installed in smaller boats) -also Renault4-based as the Toros ?

Hi Reid, as fas as I can google, before 1972 they were all Bernard (stationary) engines
In 1972 Bernard was taken over by Renault and the only maritime Renault engine I know of is the DTN-40-50.

Regards, Joop

This is the water pump with removable pulley. I have one, new. I am located in Athens, too ;-D (the original one, in Greece!). PM me if you are interested.
