What have I done! (R4 GTL)

Today started with opening bleeding nipple on front calipers so that oil get down throught pipes.

Then sanded rear pads and washed rear brakes from dust

After that drums came in line. Sanding, cleaning from dust, removing old grease

Put them back on car, new grease on bearing.

Meanwhile brake oil started to drip from bleeding nipple. Closed nipple and pressed few times brake to adjust pads. Tightened hand brake.

Went for test ride. Handbrake is working fine, brake pedal is still soft and need to pump it up for perfect brake power, but not surprised as i did not bleed calipers as they should be bleed. Need one more pair of feet to do that. Hope to get them (one more pair of feet) tomorrow.
That is it for today.

Nice job, your R4 is coming on very well. I had to much 'free play' movement on my new rear wheel bearings, so I tightened them up just enough to remove the free play, and checked with the wheel on the car. Not too tight though !

Brakes bleeded.

Two days of ride to settle brakes and then MOT.
Hope everything will be alright

It is ninth in row.

Do you have an MOT every year in Croatia ? We only have an MOT every 2 years in Cyprus, and only €35.

Result of my brake game

Todays MOT test print out
IMG_20240216_211840.jpg

Front brakes 4% difference L/R
Rear brakes 9% difference L/R
Hand brakes 4% difference L/R

I am very happy about result.
And examiner was quite pleased

Not so happy whit eco test.
Not so much with result, as it passed, but more because CO was oscillated a lot without noticable change in engine idle speed or rpm change or touching anything
CO went from 0.6 to 3.5 in very short time.
What could be cousing this oscilation?

Good to hear that your R4 passed the MOT test ! They don't check the CO2 exhaust on Classic cars over 30 years old here, unless smoking a lot. Maybe your carburettor needs adjusting ? Are your spark plugs the correct colour ? and not black with soot ?

Engine is not in so good condition.
Coolant is getting into engine.
I have mayones on oil filler cap and white residue on sparks. So bad eco test isnot surprise.
I just was surpprised that CO oscilated a lot. I was thinking it will be heigh and stay somewhere close to that number.
Did not expected it will jump from 0.6 to 3.5 in mater of 10 seconds while engine was running idle.

Another carb is ready for opening and cleaning. Hope that will make some change.
But untill engine is opened and renewed it won't be much difference

Last weekend i have done small road trip.

Made some 700km.
Reason, to be wedding car to first owner granddaughter.

She, together with her sister have spent a lot of time in this car during childhood.

There was no question will i do it, when she asked me to drive her to her wedding.

Act of honour to her grandfather who past away few years back

Meanwhile i have some issues with front right wheel/suspension.

Whenever i drive on bumpy road, go over crack on road or manhole or speedbump i get sound similar to two metal pot lid hitting each other.
I am already crazy as i have changed most of parts on front left and right side.
springs on brake pads
brake calliper brackets with sliders
new upper wishbones
front shocks
All ball joints are firm, all rubber bushes are good.

Now i am at steering box as i have find out that there is some play at left side of box where bar exits box.
IMG_20240707_204842.jpg

So i have opened cover at took all out

IMG_20240709_205607.jpg

measured for plastic "thing" and edge of housing
IMG_20240713_204416.jpg
IMG_20240709_205507.jpg

All shims inside gave thickness of 2,5mm which means i have 0,5mm clearance. That is way to much

Made new shim with 0,7mm. That is thinnest material i could find.
IMG_20240717_154425.jpg

Took one old shim out and put new inside.
Clean old grease and put new at bearings

IMG_20240805_160520.jpg

IMG_20240805_162335.jpg

And bar together with worm
IMG_20240805_161901.jpg
IMG_20240805_160517.jpg

And put all back together

IMG_20240805_164724.jpg

Now there is no more such big play. I still can notice small play when i push it. But this is the best i can do

Need to put it back in car ( i have another in car so i can drive it) and see if i have done something.

I presume steering will be more punctual but not so sure that will remove that two pot lids i am driving with.

Hi Petak,
And what about the reaction arm bushings or as we call it the so called cow eyes?

It's always a puzzle and search hearing metal on metal, maybe the front torsion bar(s) are hitting the floor somewhere or the gearstick -lever transfer?
Whenever the cause looks obvious try the unobvious.

Checked that romb rubber bush also. it is in good condition.

Torsion bars have different kind of sound, same as gearstick.

To be honest, do not know anymore.
All big important things i have checked and they are firm and good.

At the end it will be some silly thing, but it drives me crazy.

A sound like two metal pot lids doesn't sound like suspension. Suspension is normally a knock. Metal pot lids would be something hitting the body shell. Exhaust where it goes through the inner wing might do it.
