Renault 4 Ride Height

Renault 4s seem to have been set at different heights depending on the year of manufacture. The pre-1965 cars often seem very high at the front and the back. Post 1965 up until the last 850cc engined cars in 1978 are generally set at a more sensible height.

I am not aware of any major changes to the suspension on UK saloons between 1969 and the end of production, but fitting the much heavier 1108cc engine in 1978 significantly lowered the front of the GTL, and a larger fuel tank lowered the back a little too.

The Height Measurement

Using the diagram below, roll the car onto a flat surface and draw a line between the front hubs and measure the height of the center of the hub (H1) and the chassis on the same line (H2). The difference is a measurement for the front ride height taking into account any difference caused by the tyres you have on the car. Same for the rear.

There is some data below.

Ride Height Measurements

These measurements have been taken by forum members on cars at least 25 years old. They might not be accurate, and the cars might have settled a bit over the years. The figures are an indication of what everyone else has rather than a target to aim for in a rebuild.
